Many parents want to give their children an early advantage these days.  One way to accomplish this is to begin teaching babies to read before their first birthdays.  This is much easier to do than parents can imagine.  By using the following five tips, you will be well on your way to teaching your baby to read.

Invest in videos that teach babies to read.   Many babies are attracted to television.  By using some videos that are formatted to teach babies to read, you can entertain your baby while imparting them with a critical skill.  These videos are fun for babies to watch and they won’t even know they are being taught to read.

Use letter play.  Get some magnetic letters for the fridge or foam letters for the tub.  Create words on demand to teach your baby.  Your baby will be attracted to the bright colors and your enthusiasm as you spell out words.  Baby won’t realize that they are really learning to read.

Use flash cards with pictures.  Babies are capable of learning new words without even seeing a picture, but they love to see an image of the words they are reading.  It is like a reward to them.  Try using flash cards that have the word on one side and the picture on the opposite side.  Your baby is capable of learning all kinds of words and what they mean this way.

Create a family photo album.  Get a small photo album and some index cards.  Using red or black marker, write baby’s name on the index card.  Insert this into the album making it the first page.  Flip the page and insert baby’s photo there.  Continue on, adding baby’s favorite people, showing first their name and then their picture.  By flipping through the album and saying each name first, your baby is learning to read while looking at their loved ones.

Go on a word hunt.  Take out some flash cards or word cards and take your baby on a word hunt.  Tell your baby you have to see if you can find some words.  Scatter some words throughout one room of the house and act like detectives as you find the words.  Your baby will be helping you look for word cards.  As you read each card out loud, your baby will be learning to read.
